I think you need some paint - a sunny yellow or teal green.
Glad to see that you are back and well.

Zohreh,

Of course it is for sale. I am so glad you like it! It makes me so happy when people enjoy these little paintings. It is painted the right size for a smaller IKEA frame. around 8.5 x 11 - but a bit smaller, IKEA frames ore in metric and sort of strange sizes - bu inexpensive, the one I use is $14.00. This painting is $60.00 - unframed. hugs.

Nice to hear from you! I hope that you and family are well...

nicely put. I dont want to waffle, but yet, follow those inner impulses. Luckily I also have some pretty trustworthy benchmarks, too keep on track. Looking at the longterm as well as the short is good for me too.

Interesting to see where the process takes you. It takes a lot of trust and courage to just let things evolve sometimes, especially when you use it to pay the bills. life is a journey, don't you think, and sometimes it's easier to see where it takes you than force it in one direction or another.
It's a ballance, though, because you don't just want to drift and take the easy path either. I haven't figured out the answer to this one yet...

Hey Cam, sure.

So um I cant remember where I got wordpress from originally. I think I linked it through the web hosting service. It ends up being so that I can use my own URL rather than the wordpress tag. Its been good. I cant wait to read your blog!

We went to HP last weekend (when it was freezing!) with Michelle's sister's family. Gotta stop for pie at that cafe near the entrance.

There is actually a home a short walk from our place that looks like a converted barn. There are a few interesting places nearby to us that appear to be old acreage properties and farm houses that have had the city grow all around them. There is even a road that's not paved ... it's a bit odd, feels like a rural village in the middle of Calgary. Take a ground level walk with Google maps: http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=5400+Dalhousie+Dr+NW,+Calgary,+AB&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=25.255285,55.722656&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=5400+Dalhousie+Dr+NW,+Calgary,+Division+No.+6,+Alberta&ll=51.107464,-114.166982&spn=0.000749,0.001701&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.107491,-114.167026&panoid=X6HUVwsJU42Ba4NQ4lRyxQ&cbp=12,358.94,,0,5

These last two remind me so much of Cam's art - even the colours (the teals and the oranges.) I think they're gorgeous, keep up the good work Angie!

I met a lady the other night that might be interested in art classes for her teenage son (but she says her son is so busy with hockey six nights a week she's not sure when he'd fit it in.) Do you have classes for kids this age? Maybe I could pass on some information anyway for when he has time - a summer workshop maybe?

PS: Hasn't the weather these past 3 or 4 weeks been amazing (and some really cool sunsets and skylines!) HUGS

oh wow, Karolina. You know so much more about all this than I do! But so exciting to read your thoughts. I totally agree about the density issue. I also think that it can have an impact on walkability. Walking accross a dead parking lot or open field can be so awful in winter, and yet along a covered row of shops, or within our little complex its pleasant. We notice a huge temeperature difference between outside within our little complex (which is really well designed, and a good example of what can be done...) vs. just a block over, where there is little consideration. Leaving trees to grow, topography, arrangements of buildings to capture warm areas, density, and interest. I also think that the new urbanism stuff could use a revamp for contemporary times, and in the prairies. would be so fun to do some design work in this area. I get such a beef out of light rail, the "ring road" and all the sprawl. But lets not get into that!

oh wow, Karolina. We notice a huge temeperature difference between outside within our little complex (which is really well designed, and a good example of what can be done…) vs. just a block over, where there is little consideration. Leaving trees to grow, topography, arrangements of buildings to capture warm areas, density, and interest. I also think that the new urbanism stuff could use a revamp for contemporary times, and in the prairies. would be so fun to do some design work in this area.
This might be an interesting little fact about density and walkability.
Research done in the 80's through HUD (old US Housing and Urban Development Department) in terms of their experience with urban transit illustrated that the more dense a community is, the more successful public/alternative forms of transportation will be, after they pumped millions of dollars across the country for light rail transit. The only successful one was in Portland, because of higher density along the transportation corridor. One of the biggest problem's that Calgary faces is a lack of density and as you said this needs to be addressed and be more inline with the city's vision.

The following fact I mentioned in Bath and I think it was Cam who questioned the validity, and as he always says "need citation". So I found the fact:
That Calgary is the same land area as New York but the density is far less:
New York City: 8.2 million people / 830 sq. kms = 9,879 ppl per sq. km
Calgary: 1 million people / 745 sq. kms = 1,342 ppl per sq. km
This has tremendous impacts on the viability of many planning ideals...

Any thoughts?

I think your thoughts about improving Rundle are very enlightened and exciting. It is very interesting that you connect the entire process for making urban landscape change to the Land Use Bylaw. Although City Master Plans state visionary statements and very forward thinking ideas, it is in fact the Land Use Bylaw which is the tool to achieve those goals and often it is very out of touch and incoherent with the stated objectives. Nevertheless, in Alberta many Land Use Bylaws have provisions for Special Control Districts which Councils can approve a land use designation that is special to a specified area. An applicant can apply to make a land use amendment and outline in detail what the conditions are of that district. What you are proposing would qualify for making the argument that such a district should be created for this area to achieve the previously stated vision. This is my thought:)

Here is a question and/or issue I have always struggled with in terms some of the broad visionary statements often included in Municipal Development Plans, any thoughts/ideas:
what does walkable mean?
I think that cities need to be walkable and built to the appropriate human scale, but my challenge is that often we take ideas from California or Florida (i.e. new urbanism movements) where the climate is much different and try to implement them in cold climates. How does one walk in -20 C and gusting winds. I believe it can be done and solutions have not been effectively explored meaningfully in Canada, especially in Alberta. How do we create warmer more inviting spaces that are more comfortable in winter, that protect us from harsh elements and capture heat from the sun...
any suggestions/thoughts?
I have other perplexing issues...but I will pace myself:)
Talk to you soon...

me so sad, because I totally just deleted Gisele's comment by accident. I dont know where it went - there is no trash bin that I can find, and well, It seems to be gone. Thats a bad side affect of spam. You get in the habbit of deleting!

She basically said that she was surprised I only have one bias, and shes curious how this bias affects my work.

Hmm. Me too. I will talk about it more sooner I am sure. Probably in the podcast. Or on Thursday. I just feel I do a lot of editing on the blog, some conscious, some sub-conscious, and I want to be clear. Yeah, thats it.

Awesome! Yes, I think the blueiage comment by Mark, was truly a moment in Art history.

I'll check out Dimension Zero! I am typically a folk-acoustic, alternative-country kinda gal, but hey - I can be swayed!
I'm glad I could have you on the site! I hope folks check out your work. Excited to see what things you make in the future! - Maybe Mark and I can chack out a concert one day - when a babysitter is available!

Thanks so much for the feature, guys! I love the podcast and it was a pleasure to be mentioned on it!

I'm afraid the Holiday Men aren't online at the moment as the site that hosted it has gone down. Me and Andrew will work on rectifying that.

Regarding the music, I'm not sure if you listened to all of the tracks, but you may have been listening to the very hardest one we have, which would account for the heavy screaming. Dimension Zero is more of a radio friendly track with a bit of everything. I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Great work, Angie and Mark. You've got a new regular listener :)

Long live Blueiage!

I know what you mean about art that has an obvious narrative, but my initial reaction to this painting was not like that. The drawing 'fit' and wasn't an add-on to the painting but as the central tenant. I think watching the painting come together chronologically gives you (the artist) a skewed opinion of what is central and what is an 'add-on'.

If you had drawn the drawing first and then painted the trees it may make you feel that the drawing was the center and the trees were added on, but it would make no difference to the viewer.

THanks! I hope that people find them entertaining at least! I like that Mark makes things so unpretentious! its a really fun way to connect and a good excuse to talk about art and keep us both connected. And thanks about the painting. Its such a special one to me. I like it too. I am not sure it speaks to everyone, but I am so glad that it means something to you. I think it takes another artist mother to get it.

Angie - your podcasts make me laugh! Mark is such a good sport. My favourite part is when you are playing the recorder and you can hear kids in the background. It sets the mood, to be sure.
Thank you for making commenting easy again - I feel bad that you had to do that. I promise to comment lots.

P.S. I absolutely adore your painting of the mom perched on top of a bridge overlooking the freeway. The way her toes curl, the way she looks off into the distance. It speaks to me.

I love the idea of an artists group. I'd love to find one, if only to have other like-minded people to chatter on with while creating. These people sound Serious, though, I think there is also a place for a more casual type of group.

Angie - You should really go to Ft. Steel (http://www.fortsteele.ca/) in the kootenays if you get a chance. It's similar to Heritage park, only bigger and more to do (and more hands-on kids can touch stuff). You can't see everything in a whole day.

Yeah, amazing art. Love the stuff she sticks in the hive and lets the bees build the honeycomb around.

Like the subtlety of the text in this one, and the layers of contrast it plays with between the trees - an almost out-of-focus quality (which I like.)

The best ones seem to be the ones we come close to destroying, eh?

We went down to Bowness Park last Sunday. Neither of us had really been there in the summer before (rather winter for skating) and we found it quite pleasant with the ponds and canals where you can paddle around in a canoe or paddle-boat, walk on the paths down to the river and make use of the picnic areas. We also crossed the river to Beaumont Park, a more natural area with walking, biking & off-leash dog paths.

Hey, wow. Thanks so much Cam. That means a lot coming from you. I've done some more, and am still getting my head round the raw canvas and ink thing. its all wet-on-wet but with varying levels of dry. I never really thought of the sketch-book quality, but yeah, I guess I like the raw and immediacy of that too. I know I love it when I see other artists who do that... but its harder when its my own, you know you sort wonder ... is this really done? I find your work more controlled though, and thoughtful. I get the sense when I look at your paintings that every little smudge has been considered. I like that. And about the shop, well I am not really expecting sales from it, but its really good for me to actually put them out there, with a price tag. It makes me much more conscious of working towards selling my work, instead of them piling up in the basement.

We really enjoyed looking at the scroll when we were at your place. Beautiful idea & artwork, it's a great way to work in that kind of raw, 'sketch-book' style because in some ways it can be more reflective and spontaneous. That's the reason I prefer the Da Vinci sketches more than his finished paintings: you get an insight into how he thought and his creative process (in some cases many random thoughts) and I find that much more interesting. I consider my art to be giant, public sketch books. Great idea with the online shop too, you'll have to let me know how that goes for you. My art is generally hard to ship, but if I ever venture into art that travels easier I should consider a shop as well.

Welcome back home! (too bad we're getting such unseasonably rainy weather) ... would the boys like to come over and go swimming on Saturday or Sunday afternoon?

I am fascinated with the pioneer life also. It's so honest. Not to romaticize it, though....

I am also thinking bask to a conversation you and I had about people who manage to align their actions with their beliefs. Why is this so hard for us?

Hi Angie,
I'm really enjoying your travel stories and reflections on home and work. My husband is really into alternative building - I know he'd really be excited by some of this!
We're planning to go to the Island in early August - do you know if there is a way we can visit Rivendell? I was there for Tara's wedding and would love to go again.
Hope you continue to have an amazing, rejuvenating time.

Hi Angie,

You summarize the great dillemas of young female architecture graduates beautifully, and I LOVE your ideas! :-) We should definitely be pooling our resources in order to create more beautiful sustainable buildings in this world.

I love bikes ... and I currently do not have a bike of my own.

I would love to live somewhere I could do most of my commuting via bike, and not be run off the road by an SUV. I'd probably love the Bike City of Copenhagen: http://www.copenhagenize.com/

Hey Angie,

Glad to hear you guys are having a superb time connecting with the ocean, nature and family/friends! The articles Gisele referred to made the front page of the SUN yesterday! (I made a copy for you for when you get home.)

I get the ocean thing, we're like that with the mountains. A connection to the earth - it feeds your soul, don't ya think? I'm making a list of just such things for my next blog post.

Have you heard - the chicken by-law has been in the news today, I keep missing it, though.

cheers.

you know what - I didnt mix it myself, so I dont know the logistics. All I know is that milk was a major component of paints in the past, and has some long life qualities. It did smell funny because we used the same paint over a couple days...but that didnt affect its usefulness... The other issue is you cant really wash the walls afterward, so it snot so great in the kitchen...but otherwise its held up over the last 10 year - since we did it...

I'll have to try that milk paint sometime. I imagine that you'd have to refrigerate it? What's the light-fastness (et al) like? I've been thinking about trying to get away from the standard petroleum derived paints.

I am so excited about your art classes, Angie!
They're not just "learn to paint" classes, they're learn to express yourself and unlock your imagination classes! I'd love to take that class and send my daughter as well.

Rivendell (or Imladris) [sigh.] Here I am in a windowless office in Calgary in the midst of Stampede. Can you sense I'm a little bit jealous? :-p

Seriously ... awesome vacation. I must visit these places. Seriously.

Where to next? Lothlorien?
