Brilliant! Bravo!
I love that quote. I remember passing it hanging on the wall while paceing with a collicky baby when it really clicked in.
Be thankful in adversity.
While lack of sleep and the demands of new motherhood are even a fraction of what other people are going through every day I wasn't handling it well and figured it qualified as adversity a little. So I decided to list all the things I was thankful for instead of dwelling on the hopeless situation I was in. It helped to take the attention off of myself for a little and get some perspective. In that moment the quote seemed to be addressed specifically to me.

I wonder what it would look like if we followed all the different parts of it? I think this is a project or a book in the making.

I have to share this video with you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6rYPHmSzcE
I am listening to that song and another one called "Awake My Soul" over and over and over again. There's something in that one that just opens me right up.
Did you know that Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling recently did some sort of collaboration in it looks like India? Funny how things come together sometimes.

Oh, thanks so much. Yes its water colour. My medium of choice right now. I so love doing the calligraphy with prayers, it seems to charge the painting, and me too! I dont really consider myself a portrait artist, but representing family love is such a thrill!

I have to tell you what we had for supper the other day:
vegtable soup made with homemade broth, Homemade fresh spelt bread with butter and a little salmon. And everyone was happy, even the meateaters!

those little bits of leftover misc vegtables go well in soup broth - store them int he freezer until you are ready for them - I know you do this already - or make fried rice with them - that's for lunch for me today.

Love the bread site - Clint figured out a similar recipe for me using spelt flour that really couldn't be easier. we've been eating a LOT of bread here lately, including my first ever current bread. yum yum. This will get us through the cold snap.

YES! Baked potato would be fabulous! you can also tear up bits of roasted chicken, or turkey... or top with thin slices of fried steak. Another secret I have yet to blog about? Sour cream. A dollop of sour cream with salad, especially one with roasted veges in it, is the best thing in the world.

cool cool cool. I like it too. My friend Gerald suggested screen printing, which is totally awesome. I may get into it. I LOVE printmaking. But there is also something cool about the pencil line drawing. And it doesn't require any more art supplies than I already have!

I love the monochromatic simplicity of this painting.
I find it so hard to do something simple - I like to layer on the details and add depth. But something simple like this is so powerful.

I think you could def. sell something like this reproduced by hand. Sometimes if what you are trying to do just seems too complicated maybe that's not the right solution for you right now. I think they would be more precious as original pieces.

And I am also entranced with the way you've left them so fresh and minimalist (I wouldn't have know it was just a 'first layer' - it seemed intentional to me. They have a really nice vague quality to them and I like the way they are all different but look the same.

Angie-
I replied to your post here:
http://silversistersstudio.blogspot.com/2010/05/i-just-have-to-do-something-with-my.html
I'm not sure that you'll agree with lumping you in there or not, as I think I may be jumping to conclusions. I struggle with these same kinds of things and wonder if that isn't part of the human condition to always be questioning and striving for more.
I love your camping list - you are so organized. I need to make me one of those as I invariably forget something.

Well, I feel the same way about your paintings Erika! I remember thats the main reason I stopped doing this kind of digital work, when I was doing mammacomic. I like to hold something in my hand and to make something real - and then this situation you end up struggling to make the image tangible and fighting with technology. I'd rather fight with a brush. It also makes me want to look into other printmaking techniques, that don't require a lot of equipment...

I'm
absolutely positively in love with your illustrations. This one is great too! I like that you put the post in facebook too because your new posts are not showing up in my google reader.

I decided that when I resume art sales I'm going to buy a fancy printer because I really struggled as well to find high quality printing that was not outrageously expensive.

hey! yes, well I did like it. But its a simple flavor that is subtle - you know? your not drinking it like you would a frappaccino thinking mmmmm. It also KILLED my horrible headache. which is cool.
Its like a good cup of coffee. A bit bitter, gives you a buzz, and you know its good for you. Apparently all Matchas taste quite different so there's lots of ones to try. I joined a forum online here: http://www.teachat.com/ That's been most helpful. They turned me onto this website: http://o-cha.com/ to buy good tea from. There's so much info its good to have a site like that. They also said some matcha can even taste like bittersweet chocolate. I gotta find me some of that! And yes. I'll make you some. I'll bring it camping!

Oooo... this matcha thing is more complicated than I thought!
You didn't actually say if you liked it (eventhough you drank 3 bowls)
I may have to take you up on your offer to come over...

I love the pots idea. We did something similar in our first rental and loved it. The look reminds me of jars of spices and things out on a shelf. unpretentious and real life, but beautiful. Celebrating the beautiful in the everyday.

i'd love to buy a print of this as well. please let me know if that's a possibility! the house with the chickens, clothesline, garden, bike, etc. reminds me of our house.

about shaving the castile soap for detergent - i grate it by hand using a fine cheese grater, then put all the ingredients in my cuisinart to blend into finer particles. it is a little bit of work, but i find it kind of fun and relaxing. it gives me an opportunity to listen to the radio or a podcast while keeping my hands busy (as if they aren't busy enough with all my other tasks - ha!). i found the soap (dr. bronner's brand) in the natural food section of our grocery store.

Painting! Calligraphy! Awesome!
I've been thinking about adding some kind of textual information to my art too, I just need to learn greek and/or latin. Those are traditional languages of science, when you look at species names, many dinosaur names are greek-derived.

Ooooo... I like the coloring book version idea! Getting kids thinking.

You know what I was thinking was that a simple line drawing like that would be easily hand-embroidered. Maybe just one line of it (line 2?) on a t-shirt or the whole thing as a wall-hanging.

I am going to look into some printing options. Also it would be cool in colour. Yesterday Marcel coloured a version of this that I printed off. He enjoyed that. Maybe I can make a "colouring book" version available by PDF....

I'm reading Paul Hawken's 'The Ecology of Commerce' right now and, like Calgary Eco-Home, was published 17 years ago. What's really troubling is the stuff he was writing about nearly two decades ago were big problems then - problems that we still largely have today and have grown more dire. Hawken's subsequent books (and many more authors) have argued (with examples) that corporations that go against the grain and embrace real, substantial sustainable practices make money in the long run through savings in efficiency and employee satisfaction with their work. Unfortunately, there is still a perception in industry that embracing sustainability (and the economy really taking into account the true costs environmentally in their matrix) is not profitable - which is true in the short-term because of the way the market is currently rigged against sustainable practices. I daresay in many ways the mainstream developers are an extension of the mainstream energy industry in that with the pursuit of profit they are not really interested in cost effectiveness: they want to keep housing as expensive as the unsustainable market permits for their annual bottom line. They also, probably, have long-term relationships with a web of companies that provide cheap manufactured material & labor who all profit at the status quo - so why would they change and risk that profit? You are probably right about professionals with expertise and consumers demanding better to make change - as well as changing the market game to perceive itself as a part of a larger, natural system and not divorced from it. Or am I just crazy?

I started reading your blog and as I got further down, found this note. This is an interesting dilemma Angie, especially for young moms. I certainly struggled with it when the girls were young. So here's my 2 cents worth from personal experience.

1) See the end at the beginning:
I've turned many times to Baha'i writings for guidance on all sorts of topics and found my source of inspiration there. Of course, "how to's" are still hit and miss and come through trial and error. Here's a couple of quotes from Abdul-Baha that may help you focus on the end goal:

"My meaning is this, that in every aspect of life, purity and holiness, cleanliness and refinement, exalt the human condition and further the development of man's inner reality. Even in the physical realm, cleanliness will conduce to spirituality, as the Holy Writings clearly state. And although bodily cleanliness is a physical thing, it hath, nevertheless, a powerful influence on the life of the spirit. … The purport is that physical cleanliness doth also exert its effect upon the human soul." and again

"External cleanliness, although it is but a physical thing, hath a great influence upon spirituality."

2) When do I do all of this?
Determine a schedule, stick to it and work on other things around it. If it's going to be Sat. morning for 3 hours, so be it! All hands on board, Mark and the boys need to chip in. You need to be the working captain! Have a list of things that need to be done that day. If you stick to it, picking toys off the ground is all you need to do during the rest of the week.

3) Assign Tasks
Give the boys responsibility: a little at a time - when they play during the week, make sure you help them understand, they need to put it away when they are finished . Their job on Sat. morning will be to put their room in order - maybe their weekly chore can be taking the sheets off their beds, vacuum & dust their room, even fold clothes from the dryer. Their daily habit might be to help mom set the table, make salad, clear the table & even wash dishes. Teach them how to do a thorough job (you'll have to be patient here ;)

4) Do deep cleaning once in while only
Clean fridge, exterior of cupboards etc. may need once in a month, whereas carpets (especially if you have pets), curtains, windows etc. need to be done at least once a year. Don't try to do everything everyday, every weekend etc.

5) Learn from good examples
If you like something that someone is doing, ask them how they do it! In turn, your kids will learn from your good habits, they often observe and repeat behaviour. So don't obsess over things and show your stress, just do it.
Kids love order (as you mentioned, as soon as you clean they destroy: this shows that orderliness inspires them to be creative with their toys!) and they love schedules, so take advantage and make it fun!

6) Love it!
If you leave it, no one will do it, so go ahead and enjoy it! It's good exercise and you get a sense of accomplishment at the end of it. Reward the little ones for good job: milk shake, pbj sandwich, frozen berries are all good snacks.

It's still a challenge for me but I try to stay on top of it so it doesn't become overwhelming.

Hope this helps.
love always,
m.

I think so to. Actually I HOPE so. or then I feel totally inadequate. I do think that some people have clean habits that I just dont have, and have to learn from scratch. Cleaning constantly is becoming the only possible solution though. I just wonder if the rest of my family has any idea how much I pick up after them? It disturbs me to think I may be perpetuating their slobiness by my habitual cleaning. Anyways, your place seems clean to me - and I was so inspired by your freezer! I am totally freezing farmers-market veges this year.

Hi, Angie!
I think people are a LOT messier than they let on in blogland.
One friend with a neat house said once that she is always cleaning something. Just constantly picking up stuff or cleaning things as she is doing other things. I try, honestly, I do, but it doesn't work for me, either.
Have you seen all the baskets in my house? We hide stuff...

Zohreh,

Of course it is for sale. I am so glad you like it! It makes me so happy when people enjoy these little paintings. It is painted the right size for a smaller IKEA frame. around 8.5 x 11 - but a bit smaller, IKEA frames ore in metric and sort of strange sizes - bu inexpensive, the one I use is $14.00. This painting is $60.00 - unframed. hugs.

Nice to hear from you! I hope that you and family are well...

nicely put. I dont want to waffle, but yet, follow those inner impulses. Luckily I also have some pretty trustworthy benchmarks, too keep on track. Looking at the longterm as well as the short is good for me too.

Interesting to see where the process takes you. It takes a lot of trust and courage to just let things evolve sometimes, especially when you use it to pay the bills. life is a journey, don't you think, and sometimes it's easier to see where it takes you than force it in one direction or another.
It's a ballance, though, because you don't just want to drift and take the easy path either. I haven't figured out the answer to this one yet...

Hey Cam, sure.

So um I cant remember where I got wordpress from originally. I think I linked it through the web hosting service. It ends up being so that I can use my own URL rather than the wordpress tag. Its been good. I cant wait to read your blog!

We went to HP last weekend (when it was freezing!) with Michelle's sister's family. Gotta stop for pie at that cafe near the entrance.

There is actually a home a short walk from our place that looks like a converted barn. There are a few interesting places nearby to us that appear to be old acreage properties and farm houses that have had the city grow all around them. There is even a road that's not paved ... it's a bit odd, feels like a rural village in the middle of Calgary. Take a ground level walk with Google maps: http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=5400+Dalhousie+Dr+NW,+Calgary,+AB&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=25.255285,55.722656&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=5400+Dalhousie+Dr+NW,+Calgary,+Division+No.+6,+Alberta&ll=51.107464,-114.166982&spn=0.000749,0.001701&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.107491,-114.167026&panoid=X6HUVwsJU42Ba4NQ4lRyxQ&cbp=12,358.94,,0,5

These last two remind me so much of Cam's art - even the colours (the teals and the oranges.) I think they're gorgeous, keep up the good work Angie!

I met a lady the other night that might be interested in art classes for her teenage son (but she says her son is so busy with hockey six nights a week she's not sure when he'd fit it in.) Do you have classes for kids this age? Maybe I could pass on some information anyway for when he has time - a summer workshop maybe?

PS: Hasn't the weather these past 3 or 4 weeks been amazing (and some really cool sunsets and skylines!) HUGS

oh wow, Karolina. You know so much more about all this than I do! But so exciting to read your thoughts. I totally agree about the density issue. I also think that it can have an impact on walkability. Walking accross a dead parking lot or open field can be so awful in winter, and yet along a covered row of shops, or within our little complex its pleasant. We notice a huge temeperature difference between outside within our little complex (which is really well designed, and a good example of what can be done...) vs. just a block over, where there is little consideration. Leaving trees to grow, topography, arrangements of buildings to capture warm areas, density, and interest. I also think that the new urbanism stuff could use a revamp for contemporary times, and in the prairies. would be so fun to do some design work in this area. I get such a beef out of light rail, the "ring road" and all the sprawl. But lets not get into that!

This might be an interesting little fact about density and walkability.
Research done in the 80's through HUD (old US Housing and Urban Development Department) in terms of their experience with urban transit illustrated that the more dense a community is, the more successful public/alternative forms of transportation will be, after they pumped millions of dollars across the country for light rail transit. The only successful one was in Portland, because of higher density along the transportation corridor. One of the biggest problem's that Calgary faces is a lack of density and as you said this needs to be addressed and be more inline with the city's vision.

The following fact I mentioned in Bath and I think it was Cam who questioned the validity, and as he always says "need citation". So I found the fact:
That Calgary is the same land area as New York but the density is far less:
New York City: 8.2 million people / 830 sq. kms = 9,879 ppl per sq. km
Calgary: 1 million people / 745 sq. kms = 1,342 ppl per sq. km
This has tremendous impacts on the viability of many planning ideals...

Any thoughts?

I think your thoughts about improving Rundle are very enlightened and exciting. It is very interesting that you connect the entire process for making urban landscape change to the Land Use Bylaw. Although City Master Plans state visionary statements and very forward thinking ideas, it is in fact the Land Use Bylaw which is the tool to achieve those goals and often it is very out of touch and incoherent with the stated objectives. Nevertheless, in Alberta many Land Use Bylaws have provisions for Special Control Districts which Councils can approve a land use designation that is special to a specified area. An applicant can apply to make a land use amendment and outline in detail what the conditions are of that district. What you are proposing would qualify for making the argument that such a district should be created for this area to achieve the previously stated vision. This is my thought:)

Here is a question and/or issue I have always struggled with in terms some of the broad visionary statements often included in Municipal Development Plans, any thoughts/ideas:
what does walkable mean?
I think that cities need to be walkable and built to the appropriate human scale, but my challenge is that often we take ideas from California or Florida (i.e. new urbanism movements) where the climate is much different and try to implement them in cold climates. How does one walk in -20 C and gusting winds. I believe it can be done and solutions have not been effectively explored meaningfully in Canada, especially in Alberta. How do we create warmer more inviting spaces that are more comfortable in winter, that protect us from harsh elements and capture heat from the sun...
any suggestions/thoughts?
I have other perplexing issues...but I will pace myself:)
Talk to you soon...

me so sad, because I totally just deleted Gisele's comment by accident. I dont know where it went - there is no trash bin that I can find, and well, It seems to be gone. Thats a bad side affect of spam. You get in the habbit of deleting!

She basically said that she was surprised I only have one bias, and shes curious how this bias affects my work.

Hmm. Me too. I will talk about it more sooner I am sure. Probably in the podcast. Or on Thursday. I just feel I do a lot of editing on the blog, some conscious, some sub-conscious, and I want to be clear. Yeah, thats it.

Awesome! Yes, I think the blueiage comment by Mark, was truly a moment in Art history.

I'll check out Dimension Zero! I am typically a folk-acoustic, alternative-country kinda gal, but hey - I can be swayed!
I'm glad I could have you on the site! I hope folks check out your work. Excited to see what things you make in the future! - Maybe Mark and I can chack out a concert one day - when a babysitter is available!

Thanks so much for the feature, guys! I love the podcast and it was a pleasure to be mentioned on it!

I'm afraid the Holiday Men aren't online at the moment as the site that hosted it has gone down. Me and Andrew will work on rectifying that.

Regarding the music, I'm not sure if you listened to all of the tracks, but you may have been listening to the very hardest one we have, which would account for the heavy screaming. Dimension Zero is more of a radio friendly track with a bit of everything. I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Great work, Angie and Mark. You've got a new regular listener :)

Long live Blueiage!

I know what you mean about art that has an obvious narrative, but my initial reaction to this painting was not like that. The drawing 'fit' and wasn't an add-on to the painting but as the central tenant. I think watching the painting come together chronologically gives you (the artist) a skewed opinion of what is central and what is an 'add-on'.

If you had drawn the drawing first and then painted the trees it may make you feel that the drawing was the center and the trees were added on, but it would make no difference to the viewer.

THanks! I hope that people find them entertaining at least! I like that Mark makes things so unpretentious! its a really fun way to connect and a good excuse to talk about art and keep us both connected. And thanks about the painting. Its such a special one to me. I like it too. I am not sure it speaks to everyone, but I am so glad that it means something to you. I think it takes another artist mother to get it.
